Office Lunches...Sans Sandwich
By: Leslie DePodesta, Registered Dietitian
If carrying lunch is too reminiscent of school days maybe it's because you're packing the same old sandwiches.
Dump the Brown Bag Blues
There are lots of ways to make your lunch something to look forward to, especially if your office lunchroom has a fridge, freezer and microwave oven. By bringing your own lunch, you'll eat better, save money and still have time for a little shopping or a brisk walk at lunchtime.
Save Time and Shop Right
Delicious, healthy lunches start in the grocery store. If you don't buy quick, healthy choices at the store, you won't have them available at home when you're rushing out the door for work. Make a shopping list and try some of the ideas below. Browse the grocery store for new ideas and then add them to your list.
Fresh Office Lunch Ideas:
- Individual portioned yogurt (don't forget a plastic spoon!)
- Baby carrots (if you like, pack a little "lite" mayo for a dip)
- Individual size microwaveable, frozen entrées (look for those that are lower in fat and calories)
- Ready made salads (fresh in a bag or new frozen, microwaveable salad bowls that can be served hot or cold)
- Make "planned overs" at dinner and take the extra for lunch the next day
- Individual fruit cups, puddings or applesauce, juice boxes
- Nuts and seeds such as almonds and sunflower seeds (keep in your drawer for snacks)
- Fresh fruit - the original fast food
