Finding fresh ways to have fun with your family can be challenging, especially if you're on a tight budget. Yet you may be surprised how many no-cost options are available in your own town. Read on for a list of free-fun ideas to get you started.

  • Check it out. Of course, borrowing books, DVDs and CDs from the library costs nothing. But did you know your local library is also a source of entertaining events for young and old? From weekly story times to monthly book clubs, check out your library's website to learn what's available.
  • Share yourself. Volunteering gives you a chance to have fun while helping others. Talk about a win-win.
  • Park it. Your local playground can entertain the kids and give you a workout at the same time. (Adult challenge: Can you still cross the monkey bars?) Even better, many park systems offer free nature programs throughout the year.
  • Get cultured. Explore the arts without denting your wallet. Some museums have free admission every day while others feature one free day per month. Museum websites list details.
  • Note-worthy outings. Expand your musical tastes and support your community at the same time. During the summer, outdoor concerts are offered in many cities and towns. When the weather cools off, check your local paper for listings of church or school concerts.
  • Stay home. Play board games. Invite the neighbors for a rousing game of kickball. Write stories or read books as a family. The options are endless.
  • See the lights. Take advantage of a clear night to stargaze. Check the Web for star maps, get out your binoculars (or telescope) and be dazzled by the universe.

Remember: Fun can be found most anywhere. See how many new adventures you can have without spending a dime.
